Blood Loss in Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery

Abstract
Blood loss was measured in 97 normal obstetric patients, who had undergone spontaneous vaginal delivery on the delivery table by the cyanmethemoglobin spectrophotometric method at the National Medical Center in the period from June 1, 1969 to August 31, 1969. Specific. obstetric factors which might contribute to the blood loss were studied upon the measured blood loss and following results were obtained.
1. The mean blood loss on the delivery table was 268¡¾152m1 for all patients, 269¡¾152m1 for primiparas and 251¡¾180m1 for multiparas.
2. Of 97 patients 7 patients lost more than 5OOml of blood and its incidence was 7. 2%.
3. Increased blood loss was related to increase in the age of mother and-women who had delivered 4 or more children previously lost significantly more blood than women who had delivered 1-3 children before.
4. Increased blood loss was related to (1) increase in the weight of the mother, of the baby, and of the placenta; (2) prolongation of the labor and of third stage.
5. The state of perineum did not contribute to blood loss in the present study.
6. Primiparas who had undergone abortion 2 times or more lost significantly more blood than primiparas who had undergone abortion once or none but this was not observed in multiparas.
7. Comparison of estimated and measured blood loss was of interest. Estimation of blood loss was unreliable. When blood losses were small, they were overestimated, and when they were large they were underestimated a more important error.
